2014: The year of opportunity

2014 will see a landscape of real opportunity for local government.  Some of the current budget gaps are so great that almost nothing will be off the table.  Re-defining the role of local authorities will be about real change, not playing at the margins, in particular when it comes to services which have traditionally always been delivered by local authorities.  For example, discussions about what type of role to play in education could be a seismic shift for some local authorities.

Elections have, historically, stimulated action and setting ‘hard’ deadlines for things to be delivered, and an election in 2015 might be a good catalyst for action, and, more importantly, some government spending, in 2014.
